Four days in a Chair (Part 1) Day One

For the next four days I will be in a wheel chair. I'll be writing about my experiences throughout the time that I'm 'disabled'. The point of this is to raise awareness around what disabled people have to go through every day. The subsequent article will be published in the upcoming edition of the Sentinel.

Well I got the wheel chair yesterday from a place called Soper's Mobility Aids. They are great people and they really supported my endeavor. The chair normally would have cost 45 dollars to rent for a week, however, we worked out an agreement where the Sentinel will give them an ad in exchange for the chair.

I woke up this morning at 8:30. I forced myself not to use my legs. I crawled out of bed and then wiggled my way into my pants. My house is not handicap accessible. In fact it's probably as far away from being handicap accessible as a house could possibly be. After dressing myself I crawled to the bathroom because I had to pee. This trip was both mentally and physically exhausting. I will admit I used my legs a bit, but the majority of the time they were useless appendages. After I used the bathroom I crawled to the living room couch where I'm currently located.

I've got to admit that I'm looking forward to being able to use the wheelchair. I think that it will beat having to crawl around on my stomach.

Today my mom is driving me into town. I will probably go to a coffee shop and the wheel around NIC. I'm nervous to go out into public in my chair, however it is a necessary step to truly appreciating what life in a chair is like.

Last night I messed around on the wheelchair a bit. I will admit it was rather fun, however I think the novelty will wear off fast.

Well that is all for now, I will post again later today.
